- Brown, B.V et al. (2009) have published with the NRC Research Press in Ottawa the Manual of Central American Diptera, Vol. 1. Among the introductory and general chapters as well as treatments of 41 other dipteran families are a chapter on the Chironomidae Martin Spies, Trond Andersen, John Epler and Charles Watson. Although a lengthly editing and publishing cycle has made some of the lists slightly outdated, it is nonetheless a useful book.
- Wichard et al.: Biological Atlas of Aquatic Insects contains sections on the mode of life of larval midges, anal papillae and blood gills, case making, and specific biological information on Diamesa and Clunio marinus. Each chapter contains a page with opposite scanning microscopical photos.
- P.H. Langton and L.C.V. Pinder have published through the Freshwater Biological Association Keys to the Adult Male Chironomidae of Britain and Ireland, in 2 volumes (ISBN 978-0-900386-75-6; ISSN 0367-1887)
- An Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America, 4th Edition, is now available. The numerous errors contained in the first run (not the fault of the editors) have been corrected by the publisher. (added March 2008).
