Concerning the Chironomidae species with formal scientific names and the corresponding type material held in the Diptera Section of the ZSM in Munich, Germany, a listing (in PDF; latest update 4 March 2019) may be downloaded from:

† L. C. (Clive) V. Pinder
6 December 1943 - 31 July 2021

Dear all,

sadly, the chironomid research community has lost another very influential and respected colleague, Clive Pinder, who passed away aged 77 in his adopted and beloved county of Dorset (UK).

In Dr. Pinder's honour, the CHIRONOMUS Journal of Chironomidae Research has just published an appreciation by Peter S. Cranston; please see https://www.ntnu.no/ojs/index.php/chironomus/article/view/4101/3752.

† Leonard Charles ('Len') Ferrington, Jr
28 July 1948 - 11 September 2021

Very sadly, we are having to bid farewell to yet another long-standing and distinguished member of our community, Len Ferrington, whose passing is an unexpected blow.

From Minnesota I have been sent links to two online notices,
a longer one (surely authorized by the family) https://www.holcombhenryboom.com/obituary/leonard-ferrington-jr
and a shorter one in a major newspaper https://www.startribune.com/obituaries/detail/0000402917/?fullname=dr-leonard-c-ferrington,-jr

ADDENDUM 31.xii.2021. Just published: Bouchard, R. W. Jr, Kranzfelder, P., Anderson, A. M. (2021) Leonard C. Ferrington, Jr. (1948-2021): Chironomid cognoscente and modern-day Renaissance man. † Henk J. Vallenduuk
8 March 1943 - 6 November 2021

It is with increasing sadness that I have to report the third loss to our research community within just a few months.

At least here in Europe, many macroinvertebrate workers trying to identify chironomid larvae will remain grateful to Henk Vallenduuk for his long and laborious efforts to help with such tasks, e.g. by regularly performing individual larva-to-adult rearings and then publishing his findings in keys.

A memorial paper (in Dutch language) can be found at: https://www.helpdeskwater.nl/publish/pages/195829/macrofaunanieuwsmail-157-18-november-2021.pdf
