† Mauri Hirvenoja
1928 - 10 July 2023

Yesterday I received the sad news that Mauri Hirvenoja from Finland, one of the longest-standing members of our research community, passed away on 10 July 2023. So far, I have not received any further details that could be communicated here.

The "Bibliography of the Chironomidae" ( contains references to 36 works authored or coauthored by Hirvenoja between 1960 and 2015. His magnum opus, the 1973 revision of Cricotopus and neighboring genera, a more than 350 pages strong result of his doctoral dissertation, is likely to be remembered as one of the peak efforts in the chironomid literature.

All information given in the paper - not least the male antenna with 11 flagellomeres, and the hypopygium - suggests beyond any reasonable doubt that the species does not belong to Polypedilum but to 'Einfeldia sensu lato'. Within the latter old grouping, which includes members of several current genus-level taxa (e.g. Benthalia, Chironomus (Lobochironomus), Einfeldia s. str.), the proposed species name is quite likely to end up as nothing but a junior synonym.
