Identification / Re: Paratanytarsus species
Last post by Bruno Rossaro - Today at 09:19:55 AM
Yes surely; unfortunately the wings are not in good condition so it is not clear if Cu brings setae; median volsella lamellae are also difficult to analyze, but I cannot exclude that they are branched; body colour is very light suggesting T. heusdensis, because T. reei is described with darker vittae, only the enlarged digitus suggests T. reei; Molgora is a stream in lowland, the habitat is also compatible with T. heusdensis.
My conclusion is that the species is T.heusdensis, the presence of T.reei in Italy at present is not supported.

Not exactly as Bruno wrote. The structure of tibial cobms and spurs is rather weak character for separation the two genera - combs can be slightly separated and armed with a short spur in both Tanytarsus and Paratanytarsus.
Besides, I was able to see hypopygium only. The presence of spinulae (absent in Paratanytarsus) is the best key character in this case. The species fits the concept of the heusdensis group and should be compared with T. reei.

Looks similar to Tanytarsus reei Na et Bae, 2010 (Tanytarsus heusdensis group)

An important addition; I overlooked tibial combs, they are clearly separated, this character suggests Tanytarsus not Paratanytarsus as genus; I thanks Wojciech Gilka for the having put me on the advice

Yes Molgora is a stream running at East of Milano;
I suspected some similarity with P. corsicanus (publ. in Fauna Norvegica) but anal point in dorsal aspect seems different, and I have not the lateral aspect; digitus seems also different, only median volsella is similar

Dear Bruno,

In order to narrow down the range of references that may have to be consulted: Do I gather correctly that the source for your material is the Torrente Molgora, a (?fast-)running water East of Milano?

Best,

Identification / Re: Chironomus nuditarsis
Last post by Martin Spies - December 04, 2023, 11:13:40 AM
Dear Bruno,

In my opinion you are right that the name Chironomus nuditarsis is nomenclaturally available from the Keyl (1961) work you refer to. The material had been generated by Strenzke, who apparently never got around to describing the species morphologically. However, in

Klötzli, A. M. (1974) Revision der Gattung Chironomus Meig. V. Chironomus nuditarsis Keyl. Morphologische Beschreibung und Vergleich mit ähnlichen Arten. Archiv Hydrobiol. 74(1): 68-81. [publd "August 1974"; in German, with English abstract]

the author reported on page 69 that Keyl had 'courteously made available for our morphological work the nuditarsis material collected by Strenzke'.

Thus, for morphology I would (first) consult Klötzli's work, even if some morphological data may be found in earlier publications. The publication sequence of morphological treatments of the species is nomenclaturally irrelevant, as the species name is available from Keyl (1961).

For all such cases involving names in Chironomus, please recall - among possible others - the following two highly useful sources of information.

Lindeberg, B., Wiederholm, T. (1979) Notes on the taxonomy of European species of Chironomus (Diptera: Chironomidae). In: Sæther, O. A. (ed.): Recent developments in chironomid studies (Diptera: Chironomidae). Ent. scand. Suppl. 10: 99-116.

Dr. Jon Martin's highly helpful webpages, e.g. https://www.chironomidae.net/Martin/JMRes.html, in the present case especially https://www.chironomidae.net/Martin/Chironfiles/Names.htm

Best regards,

Martin Spies (SNSB-ZSM, Munich)
